These observations describe three representative samples assessed internally by Moonessa. They are not a universal ranking of towel types. Read the samples, method and limitations.

Moonessa weight classes: relative drying time

Lower value means faster. This is Moonessa’s relative class guide; actual drying depends on the towel and conditions. The sample comparison above is a separate internal evaluation.

Cotton alone does not define quality. Here’s what to check before you choose.

Look Beyond “100% Cotton”

“Cotton” identifies the fibre—not the yarn quality. Premium combed cotton removes shorter fibres, creating a smoother, stronger and naturally soft yarn.

Moonessa uses 100% premium combed cotton, without microfibre or synthetic blends.

Feel the Tassels

Surface treatments can make a towel feel temporarily softer. Tassels expose the yarn more directly, so their natural softness and consistency offer a useful quality clue.

Check the Weave and Finish

Look for an even flat weave, neatly finished edges and secure tassels. Pre-washing also helps reduce initial shrinkage and makes the towel ready to use.

Our towels are pre-washed before packing and finished with secure, hand-twisted tassels.

Compare GSM and Size

For Standard-size towels, lower GSM prioritises lighter packing and quicker drying. Higher GSM adds softness and water-holding capacity. Always compare GSM with the towel’s dimensions.

Verify the Certification

Look for verifiable certification such as OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100, alongside clear fibre, construction and care information.

Check the certificate number, covered product and validity using the issuer’s verification service.

Check the Origin

A Turkish towel woven in Türkiye connects directly to the peshtemal tradition. Quality still depends on the yarn, weave, finishing and quality control.

Moonessa towels are designed in Perth, Australia and woven in Türkiye by experienced Turkish makers.

The weight trade-off

As GSM rises, softness and water-holding capacity increase. As GSM falls, drying speed, Standard-size packability and sand release improve. No class is better overall—it depends on the balance you prefer.

Material, yarn, weave, GSM and construction all shape performance. “Turkish towel” does not describe one universal weight or performance level. GSM changes the balance, rather than defining quality on its own. Compare relative drying times.

Absorbency and water-holding capacity

All three classes absorb water well. Fuller weaves hold more water before saturation.

Choose your towel style

Pattern shapes the look. Weight and construction shape performance.

• Beach Stripes: Classic stripes, bold colour blocks and playful coastal pairings.
• Minimal: Quiet colours, subtle borders and understated woven texture.
• Artisan Weave: Geometric motifs and tactile patterns woven into the towel.

Machine wash gently at up to 40°C without fabric softener. Line dry, or tumble dry on low. See our care guide for first-wash and tassel care.

Combed cotton naturally softens with washing, especially when fabric softener is avoided.

Pre-washing helps reduce initial shrinkage, while yarn-dyed construction supports lasting colour. Follow the care instructions for the best result.

Turkish towel

A flat-woven cotton towel rooted in Türkiye’s hammam tradition.

Peshtemal (peştemal)

The traditional Turkish name for a flat-woven hammam towel. “Peshtemal” and “hammam towel” are commonly used English alternatives.

Hammam

A traditional Turkish bathhouse where peshtemals were used for coverage and drying.

Terry towel

A conventional towel made with raised loops that create a thicker pile.

Flat weave

A loop-free construction that helps a towel dry faster and release sand more easily than terry. For compact packing, choose a Standard size.

Fine flat weave

Moonessa’s lightest flat-weave construction, used in the Lightweight class.

Dense flat weave

Moonessa’s denser flat-weave construction, used in the Midweight class to balance softness and capacity, with portability in Standard sizes.

Full flat weave

Moonessa’s fullest flat-weave construction, used in the Plush class for extra softness and water-holding capacity.

Weight class

Moonessa’s Lightweight, Midweight and Plush categories, grouped by GSM and performance balance.

GSM

Grams per square metre—the standard measure of fabric weight. Higher GSM generally creates a fuller towel with greater water-holding capacity.

Sand-free

Moonessa’s term for Lightweight towels—our easiest class to shake clean at the beach.

How Moonessa uses these terms

Sand-resistant

Used for Midweight and Plush towels. Sand still shakes off readily, though not as easily as with Lightweight.

Quick drying

A relative measure of drying time. See Moonessa’s relative drying scale; lower means faster.

Absorbency

A towel’s ability to take up water. All three Moonessa classes absorb water well; fuller weaves hold more water before saturation.

Water-holding capacity

How much water a towel holds before feeling saturated. Capacity generally rises with GSM.

Combed cotton

Cotton with shorter fibres removed before spinning, creating a smoother, stronger and naturally soft yarn.

Standard size

Moonessa’s full-body towel size. See dimensions and uses.

Oversized (XL)

Moonessa’s larger size for extra coverage, lounging and sharing. See dimensions and uses.

OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100

Certification showing every component of the finished textile has been tested against OEKO-TEX® limits for harmful substances.

This comparison is based on an internal product evaluation conducted in July 2026 by the Moonessa product development team at our product studio in Perth, Western Australia. Three representative towel samples were assessed:

• Moonessa Bondi Beach Turkish Towel — 90 × 180 cm · 210 GSM
• Standard Cotton Terry Towel — 76 × 153 cm · 400 GSM
• Standard Microfibre Towel — 70 × 140 cm · 200 GSM

The towels were evaluated using consistent procedures for drying, sand release, packability, water-holding capacity, comfort, odour resistance, versatility and everyday practicality. Each towel also completed 10 wash cycles using the same washing and drying process.

This evaluation was designed to explain the practical differences observed between the three tested samples—not to declare one towel universally better than another.

Test scope and limitations: This is an internal product evaluation, not an independent or certified laboratory test. Results apply to the specific samples listed above and should not be interpreted as representative of every Turkish, terry or microfibre towel. Performance may vary with towel dimensions, GSM, fibre composition, yarn quality, weave or knit construction, washing method, airflow, temperature and humidity.
