Reference & test methodology

Reference & Test Methodology
The comparison above is based on an internal product evaluation Conducted in July 2026 by the Moonessa product development team. Testing was carried out at our product studio in Perth, Western Australia, using three representative towel types:

  • Moonessa Bondi Beach Turkish Towel — 90 × 180 cm · 220 GSM
  • Standard Cotton Terry Towel — 76 × 153 cm · 400 GSM
  • Standard Microfibre Towel — 70 × 140 cm · 200 GSM

Each towel was assessed under everyday use for drying speed, sand resistance, portability, absorbency, comfort, versatility and overall practicality. The purpose of this comparison is not to declare one towel universally better than another, but to help explain the real-world performance differences between these towel types so you can choose the option that best suits your needs.

Please note: This comparison reflects our own product testing and practical observations rather than an independent certified laboratory study. Results may vary depending on fabric composition, yarn quality, weave construction, GSM and manufacturing standards.

04 · How to Choose a High-Quality Turkish Towel

Not all Turkish towels are made to the same standard. Here’s what to look for before buying.

Check the Yarn Quality

Not all cotton is the same. Look for 100% premium combed Turkish cotton for superior softness, absorbency and durability. Towels labelled simply as “Cotton”, or made with recycled cotton, cotton blends or synthetic fibres, are unlikely to deliver the same softness, absorbency, durability and quick-drying performance.

Choose the Right Weight & Size

Turkish towels are available in different sizes and weights. While they are produced in various dimensions, the internationally recognised standard size is 90 × 180 cm. GSM (grams per square metre) is one of the biggest factors affecting performance, influencing drying speed, softness, portability and sand. Always make sure the towel’s weight and performance characteristics are clearly disclosed before you buy.

Pre-Washed and Natural Softness

A quality Turkish towel should be pre-washed before packaging, making it ready to use from day one. Pre-washing helps reveal the cotton’s natural softness without relying on artificial fabric softeners. Premium combed cotton continues to become softer with every wash while maintaining excellent absorbency. One of the easiest ways to judge natural softness is by gently feeling the tassels, where the true character of the cotton is often most noticeable.

Verify the Certification

Look for OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certification. Verify it by checking the label or scanning the QR code. If a brand doesn’t provide a valid certification, think twice before purchasing.

Check the Country of Origin

An authentic Turkish towel is woven in Türkiye. The country of origin should be clearly stated on both the product label and packaging. Products labelled “Turkish Style” or manufactured outside Türkiye may look similar, but they are not authentic Turkish towels.

Examine the Tassels

Authentic premium Turkish towels feature hand-twisted tassels, not machine-twisted ones. Hand-finished tassels reflect traditional craftsmanship and remain one of the easiest details to recognise a well-made Turkish towel.

06 · Why Three Weight Classes?

Every Turkish towel weight offers a different balance of drying speed, softness, absorbency, portability and sand resistance. Rather than leaving you to guess, Moonessa clearly categorises every towel into three weight classes—Lightweight, Midweight and Plush—and explains the performance characteristics and best-use cases of each. This makes it easier to choose the Turkish towel that best suits your lifestyle and how you plan to use it.

07 · Behind the Weight Classes

Describe your products, collection, content etc...
Three Moonessa Turkish towels representing Lightweight, Midweight and Plush weight classes, illustrating the performance differences between Turkish towel weights.

Performance Trade-Offs

As fabric weight increases, softness and water-holding capacity increase, while drying speed, portability and sand resistance gradually decrease.

Every Moonessa Turkish towel still remains significantly lighter, faster drying and more compact than a traditional terry towel—the difference is simply where each weight finds its balance.

Sand-free vs Sand-resistant

Lightweight towels are genuinely sand-free—the fine, loop-free weave leaves sand with nothing to cling to, even when wet.

Midweight and Plush are sand-resistant: sand still shakes off easily, but not quite as completely as Lightweight.

Absorbency & Water-Holding Capacity

Absorbency is how quickly a towel takes up water. Water-holding capacity is how much water it can hold before feeling saturated.

Every Moonessa towel absorbs quickly thanks to premium combed cotton—the weight classes differ in how much water they hold, not how well they absorb.

08 · How to choose in 20 seconds

  • Mostly beach and travel? LIGTWEIGHT TOWELS
  • One towel for everything? MIDWEIGHT TOWELS

11 · Caring for your Turkish towel

The short version: machine wash gentle at up to 40°C, skip the fabric softener (cotton softens naturally with every wash), and line dry or tumble dry low — a Turkish towel line-dries in a fraction of terry time. Full instructions, including tassel care and first-wash tips, live in our Product Care Guide.

12 · Glossary — Turkish Towel Terms

Plain-English definitions of the words we use — so every term means exactly one thing.
The Towel & Its Origins
Turkish towel

A flat-woven cotton towel with no raised loops, rooted in Türkiye's centuries-old hammam tradition.

Peshtemal (pestemal)

The traditional Turkish name for this towel; peshtemal, hammam towel and Turkish towel all describe the same thing.

Hammam

The traditional Turkish bathhouse where the peshtemal was originally used as a light, quick-drying wrap.

Terry towel

A conventional towel woven with raised cotton loops, which make it thicker, heavier, slower to dry and more likely to trap sand.

Weaves & Weight Classes
Flat weave

A loop-free weaving construction that makes a towel thinner, lighter and quicker to dry than looped terry fabric.

Fine flat weave

Moonessa's lightest, tightest weave, used in the Lightweight class; the closest to the traditional peshtemal.

Dense flat weave

A slightly denser weave used in our Midweight class, adding softness and body while staying flat-woven.

Full flat weave

Our fullest weave, used in the Plush class; the softest and most water-holding, still completely loop-free.

Weight class

Moonessa's three-tier system — Lightweight, Midweight and Plush — grouping towels by fabric weight so you can choose your balance of packability, softness and drying speed.

GSM

Grams per square metre, the standard measure of fabric weight; higher GSM means a heavier, fuller towel.

Performance Terms
Sand-free

Sand doesn't cling to the weave and shakes off completely, even when wet; at Moonessa this applies to the Lightweight class only.

Sand-resistant

Sand largely shakes off with ease but may cling slightly more than on a sand-free weave; this applies to our Midweight and Plush classes.

Quick-dry

Dries significantly faster than a regular terry towel: up to 5× faster (Lightweight), 4× (Midweight) or 3× (Plush).

Absorbency

How well a towel takes up water; every Moonessa towel is highly absorbent thanks to combed cotton — the classes differ in how much they hold, not in whether they absorb.

Water-holding capacity

The amount of water a towel holds before feeling saturated; it rises with fabric weight, so Plush holds the most.

Sizes, Cotton & Certification
Combed cotton

Cotton with the short fibres removed before spinning, producing a smoother, stronger yarn that becomes softer with every wash.

Standard size

Moonessa's 90 × 180 cm towel — a generous full-body size.

Oversized (XL)

Our 125 × 220 cm towels, cut for extra coverage, lounging and sharing.

OEKO-TEX® Standard 100

An independent certification confirming every component of the towel has been tested for harmful substances and is safe for skin.

Colour Families
Colour families

Colour names travel differently — one person's aqua is another's turquoise — so every Moonessa towel is grouped into nine colour families to help you land on the right shelf.

The Blue family includes navy, royal blue, sky blue, ocean blue, ice blue, night blue, denim, turquoise and aqua.

Green

The Green family includes teal, mint, khaki, sage, olive and apple green.

13 · Turkish towel questions, answered

Turkish Towel Basics
What is a Turkish towel?

A flat-woven cotton towel from the Turkish hammam tradition — lighter, faster-drying and more compact than a terry towel, with no pile loops.

Is a peshtemal the same as a Turkish towel?

Yes — peshtemal, pestemal, hammam towel and fouta are all names for the same flat-woven towel.

What is combed cotton?

Cotton that has had its short, weak fibres combed out before spinning, leaving stronger, smoother, softer yarn than regular cotton.

Where are Moonessa towels made?

Designed in Australia and woven in Turkey, the home of peshtemal craft, from 100% combed cotton certified to OEKO-TEX® Standard 100.

Performance
Do Turkish towels actually absorb water?

Yes. Combed cotton absorbs quickly in every class; heavier classes simply hold more water before needing a wring-out.

How fast do Turkish towels dry?

Up to 5× faster than a regular terry towel for Lightweight, 4× for Midweight and 3× for Plush.

Are Turkish towels sand-free?

Our Lightweight towels are genuinely sand-free; Midweight and Plush are sand-resistant — sand shakes off far more easily than terry, but we reserve "sand-free" for Lightweight.

Choosing Yours
Which Moonessa towel is best for travel?

A standard-size Lightweight: it folds to about the size of a T-shirt and dries ultra fast.

Which Moonessa towel is softest?

Plush — our thickest, softest class, and still 3× faster-drying than terry.

What size should I buy?

Standard (90×180 cm) for everyday beach and bath; Oversized XL (125×220 cm) for sharing, lounging and picnics.

Can I use a Turkish towel as a bath towel?

Absolutely — Midweight and Plush are designed with the bathroom in mind, and they dry on the rail far faster than terry.

Care & Longevity
Do Turkish towels shrink or fade?

Ours arrive pre-washed and yarn-dyed, so shrinkage is minimal and colours stay true with normal care.

Do they get softer over time?

Yes — combed cotton softens with every wash; a well-loved Turkish towel only improves.

How do I wash a Turkish towel?

Gentle machine wash up to 40°C, no fabric softener, line dry or low tumble — full details in our Product Care Guide.
