Look Beyond “100% Cotton”
“Cotton” identifies the fibre—not the yarn quality. Premium combed cotton removes shorter fibres, creating a smoother, stronger and naturally soft yarn.
A Turkish towel—also known as a peshtemal or hammam towel—is a flat-woven cotton towel rooted in Türkiye’s hammam tradition. Unlike terry, its surface has no bulky loops, helping it dry faster, pack smaller and release sand more easily.
Originally used for coverage and drying in the hammam, the same practical design now works naturally at the beach, by the pool, in the bathroom and on the go.
Good to know: “Turkish towel” does not describe one universal weight or performance level. Material, weave, GSM and construction determine how each towel feels and performs.

Reference & Test Methodology
This comparison is based on an internal product evaluation conducted in July 2026 by the Moonessa product development team at our product studio in Perth, Western Australia. Three representative towel samples were assessed:
The towels were evaluated using consistent procedures for drying, sand release, packability, water-holding capacity, comfort, odour resistance, versatility and everyday practicality. Each towel also completed 10 wash cycles using the same washing and drying process.
This evaluation was designed to explain the practical differences observed between the three tested samples—not to declare one towel universally better than another.
Test scope and limitations: This is an internal product evaluation, not an independent or certified laboratory test. Results apply to the specific samples listed above and should not be interpreted as representative of every Turkish, terry or microfibre towel. Performance may vary with towel dimensions, GSM, fibre composition, yarn quality, weave or knit construction, washing method, airflow, temperature and humidity.
Cotton alone does not define quality. Here’s what to check before you choose.
“Cotton” identifies the fibre—not the yarn quality. Premium combed cotton removes shorter fibres, creating a smoother, stronger and naturally soft yarn.
Surface treatments can make a towel feel temporarily softer. Tassels expose the yarn more directly, so their natural softness and consistency offer a useful quality clue.
Look for an even flat weave, neatly finished edges and secure tassels. Pre-washing also helps reduce initial shrinkage and makes the towel ready to use.
Lower GSM prioritises lighter packing and quicker drying. Higher GSM adds softness and water-holding capacity. Always compare GSM with the towel’s dimensions.
Look for verifiable certification such as OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100, alongside clear fibre, construction and care information.
A Turkish towel woven in Türkiye connects directly to the peshtemal tradition. Quality still depends on the yarn, weave, finishing and quality control.
We apply the same six checks to every Moonessa towel—from cotton yarn to final finish.
| Quality Check | How Moonessa Delivers |

We group Moonessa towels by GSM into Lightweight, Midweight and Plush. All three are absorbent, quick drying and versatile—weight simply shifts the balance between portability, sand release, softness and water-holding capacity.
As GSM rises, softness and water-holding capacity increase. As GSM falls, drying speed, packability and sand release improve. No class is better overall—it depends on the balance you prefer.
We use “sand-free” for Lightweight, our easiest class to shake clean. Midweight and Plush are sand-resistant—sand still shakes off easily, just not as effortlessly as with Lightweight.
Absorbency is how quickly a towel takes up water. Water-holding capacity is how much it holds before feeling saturated. All three classes use absorbent combed cotton; higher GSM simply increases capacity.
Choose Lightweight for the fastest drying, smallest pack size and easiest sand release.
Choose Midweight for a balanced towel that moves easily from beach and pool to bathroom and everyday use.
Choose Plush when a softer, fuller feel and higher water-holding capacity matter most.
Choose Oversized XL for sharing, lounging, picnics or extra coverage—in your preferred weight class.
Full coverage, quick drying and easy sand release.
Dries quickly between swims and packs neatly for the trip home.

Grams per square metre—the standard measure of fabric weight. Higher GSM generally creates a fuller towel with greater water-holding capacity.
Moonessa’s term for Lightweight towels—our easiest class to shake clean at the beach.
Used for Midweight and Plush towels. Sand still shakes off readily, though not as easily as with Lightweight.
A relative measure of drying time. On Moonessa’s scale: Lightweight 1×, Midweight 1.5×, Plush 2× and benchmark terry 3×. Lower means faster.
How readily a towel takes up water.
How much water a towel holds before feeling saturated. Capacity generally rises with GSM.
Cotton with shorter fibres removed before spinning, creating a smoother, stronger and naturally soft yarn.

Yes. Peştemal is the traditional Turkish name; “peshtemal” and “hammam towel” are commonly used English alternatives.
Designed in Perth, Australia and woven in Türkiye from 100% premium combed cotton certified to OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100.

On Moonessa’s relative test scale: Lightweight 1×, Midweight 1.5×, Plush 2× and benchmark terry 3×. Lower means faster; conditions can affect results.
Lightweight is our easiest class to shake clean and the one we describe as sand-free. Midweight and Plush are sand-resistant, with sand still releasing more easily than from terry.
Standard, approximately 90 × 180 cm, suits most beach, bath and travel use. Oversized XL, approximately 125 × 220 cm, adds room for lounging, sharing and picnics.
Choose a standard-size Lightweight for the smallest pack size, fastest drying and easiest sand release.
Plush—our fullest and softest weight class, with the highest water-holding capacity.
Absolutely. Midweight and Plush offer more softness and water-holding capacity, while Lightweight suits those who prioritise faster drying.
Machine wash gently at up to 40°C without fabric softener. Line dry, or tumble dry on low. See the full Turkish Towel Care Guide for first-wash and tassel care.
Yes. Combed cotton naturally softens with washing, especially when fabric softener is avoided.
Pre-washing helps reduce initial shrinkage, while yarn-dyed construction supports lasting colour. Follow the care instructions for the best result.
